Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Meuse, the Citadel of Dinant is the very first Belgian site to be equipped with the HistoPad in situ. This Augmented Visit device on tablet immerses visitors in the military history of the site, thanks to interactive 3D reconstructions validated by a scientific committee of historians and a brand-new immersive scenography.
Completed in 1821 by the Dutch on the remains of former medieval castles and the Vauban fort, the fortress was designed to protect France’s northern border after the Napoleonic wars. It bears witness to a continuous military presence and a major strategic position, giving it a key role in the region’s history. With the HistoPad, you can relive the great chapters of Dinant and its Citadel through a rich historical immersion accessible to all, unfolding across the centuries: scenes of daily life inside the Citadel, from the medieval era to the 19th-century Dutch garrison with its soldiers, equipment, and routines; the dawn of Belgian Independence, as the fortress was gradually integrated into the territory after 1830; and the opening battles of the First World War, experienced hour by hour. A young lieutenant named de Gaulle had his first taste of military life here, on August 15, 1944.
For this Augmented Visit, Histovery’s teams have produced exclusive reconstructions powered by the Unreal Engine 5 graphics engine. This technology makes it possible to create highly fluid real-time 3D images that are both realistic and richly detailed. In some sequences, visitors can directly interact with their environment and influence the course of the experience, making the visit lively and truly interactive.
