Colditz castle

About the project

Overlooking the town of Colditz near Leipzig, Colditz Castle is the third German castle equipped with the HistoPad in partnership with Schlösserland Sachsen.

After a six-month closure for renovation works, the castle reopened its doors in April 2024 with a fully redesigned visitor experience that includes access to newly restored wings and spaces, alongside a revamped physical exhibition featuring over 300 collection objects. The HistoPad enhances this new journey, offering visitors an immersive experience that unveils the castle’s secrets. Interactive and immersive scenes allow guests to relive 500 years of history, from the Renaissance to the 19th century to World War II.

During World War II, the castle was transformed into an Offizierslager (Oflag), a prisoner-of-war camp for Allied officers, particularly those who were repeat escapees. Protected by the Geneva Convention, these officers employed every imaginable method to escape. The HistoPad brings their stories to life.

Through augmented reality, 3D animations, and 360° views, visitors can relive key moments, such as the legendary British escape attempt using a glider or the tunnel dug by French prisoners. Made famous by the BBC series of the same name, Colditz Castle attracts visitors from across Europe to explore this historic site, which once held British, French, Polish, Belgian, and Dutch prisoners of war.
