royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans

About the project

Barely ten years before the French Revolution, Louis XV ordered this manufacture dedicated to the production of salt. It stands today as an extraordinary testament to the rich history of industrial architecture and embodies the major economic role that salt played at the time.

Thanks to the expertise of the Scientific Committee and Augmented Reality technologies, the HistoPad invites you to discover the history of the Saltworks, from its peak in the mid-19th century to its decline and revaluation in the late 1960s.

Arriving via a monumental entrance, visitors can enter the Director’s house, the brine-boilerhouses, the cooperage or the kitchen, take part in the different stages of production of “white gold” and follow in the footsteps of the building’s architect, Claude Nicolas Ledoux.
